Barcelona left the RCDE Stadium with three vital points, but one of the standout narratives from the Catalan derby was the superb performance of Joan Garcia.
Playing against his former club Espanyol in a fiercely hostile environment, the goalkeeper produced a calm and authoritative display, keeping a clean sheet at a moment when Barcelona needed it most.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Garcia’s showing was not only decisive on the night but also carried historical significance.
The report notes that the Barcelona shot-stopper equalled a milestone previously set by Marc-André ter Stegen, the goalkeeper he has effectively replaced under Hansi Flick this season.
Garcia made six saves while preserving a clean sheet — a rare feat in La Liga — and one that had only been achieved once before. Ter Stegen was the last to do so, during Barcelona’s narrow victory over Real Sociedad on November 4, 2023, secured by a decisive Ronald Araújo goal.
What adds further weight to Garcia’s achievement is the broader context. Since Ter Stegen’s display in San Sebastián, no goalkeeper in La Liga had managed to combine six saves with a clean sheet in a single match — until the derby.
Nor was the Espanyol performance a one-off. Garcia’s consistency has been building week by week, and his display earned him a second consecutive Man of the Match award.
He had also received the honour in Barcelona’s final fixture of the previous year against Villarreal, further underlining his growing status as one of the club’s most dependable performers.
With each commanding outing, Garcia is not only strengthening his position at Barcelona but also forcing his way into the international conversation ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
